HUD remake - give me your cast

Hud--- Wentworth Miller, Leo DiCaprio, Alexander Skarsgard, Henry Cavill, Tom Welling.

A couple of my choices are brunettes, but Hud did have black hair in the book.

Alma--- Halle Berry (great choice OP!), Charlize Theron, Thandie Newton, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Zoe Saldana, Nicole Kidman.

I can't decide if I like the Miller/Berry or the Cavill/Berry pairing better!

Ryan Gosling would make a good Hud

Joaquin Phoenix... Hud Bannon
F. Murray Abraham... Homer Bannon
Jennifer Connelly... Alma Brown

As for director, I would have either James Mangold or James Gray. Both of them are able to let it be the character piece that it is, while extracting the best performances possible. Phoenix, in particular, would certainly be comfortable.

Hud -- Timothy Olyphant, Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin
Homer -- Sam Elliott, Gerald McRaney, Clint Eastwood
Alma -- Thandie Newton, Angela Bassett
(Though the role of Alma might best be served by a lesser known actress.)

Ryan Gosling is a brilliant actor and one of my favorites. But he is too young to play Hud.

Of course I think the original 1963 film is perfect as is and does not need to be remade. It's the film I chose to watch the day Paul Newman passed away. Before that moment I might have assumed I'd choose Cool Hand Luke. But I needed to hear that melancholy guitar music.

Paul Newman really was a national treasure.
