Where was DeWilde's Oscar nomination?

In my opinion, Hud is one of the best movies ever made. Outstanding performances by everyone and a thought provoking drama. The setting, score, and cinematography only add to its excellence. The cast and crew did an amazing job in every aspect. Glad to see the Oscars recognized Neal and Douglass with an award as well as Newman with a nomination as they all deserved it. However, Brandon DeWilde was totally overlooked. In my opinion, he was the best. Such a tragedy that he died so young. I think he had great potential.

DeWilde was great in this, as he was in Shane. He was working amongst an incredibly talented cast and definitely held his own. So it would have been great for him to be nominated alongside Melvyn Douglas. The other nominees in the category are listed below. Has anyone else seen this movies and can compare these performances to that of DeWilde?

Nick Adams – Twilight of Honor
Bobby Darin – Captain Newman, M.D.
Hugh Griffith – Tom Jones
John Huston – The Cardinal
