question

What on earth did Lon mean when he said (to signify he's not a kid anymore) I'm out of three-cornered pants now. What on earth are three-cornered pants?

Also, in the peach ice cream scene, Lon says I've been looking forward to some locker-plaid Alberta peaches. Locker-plaid?????

reply

Three cornered pants are diapers. No idea on the locker plaid peaches.

^Diapers, of course! Thanks!

I thought he said three quarter pants as in knickers. Knickers were worn by boys in the early part of the 20th century and then when you graduated to long pants you were considered a man . Lon was 17 years old so that would have him born around 1944 so he my have very well worn knickers.

^My original post has already been answered. Lon said "three cornered pants".

Larry McMurtry's book HORSEMAN, PASS BY. Chapter one first paragraph;

For dessert that night Halmea made a big freezerful of peach ice cream, rich as Jersey milk and thick with hunks of sweet, locker-plant Albertas.

When I was young growing up in Texas most people out of the city had a freezer locker. They were rented to store slaughtered beef and hogs, butter, cheese and fruit. In HUD or the Book HORSEMAN, PASS BY, these are the last of the peaches from their rented storage freezer locker. They state that it was like something seasonal that you wait for a long time. Meaning it is a rare treat. They must have been special for them to go to all the trouble to prepare them for freezing, canning takes a lot of the flavour out of peaches. Hope this helps Stirchley.
