The house was born bad?!

Finally got to watch this movie, it was okay, I'm sure scary at the time. I wonder who haunted the house, there wasn't a child who died there so why a child crying?
Did the house really want Eleanor? The writing on the wall for her to 'come home', did that mean leave Hill House or stay permanently?

The old lady that died in the house, she had lived there since she was a child. It is quite possible that she suffered as a child and what we and Elinore were hearing was that girl crying. There was more than one ghost so the entity was tormenting Elinore with those sounds. It was playing on her pshychie

It scared the crap out of me the first time I watched it at the age of 10 or so. I still have a fond spot for it.

I think a child was heard crying because Abigail was abused as a child by her father. Note how he forces her to look at her dead mother, his obsession with the Bible, and the inscription in the nursery on the archway, "Suffer the Children, Suffer the Children, Suffer the Children."

This is a reference to Bible verse where Jesus says, "Suffer the little children to come unto me, for such is the kingdom of heaven," but it's worth noting that "suffer" in the actual verse means "allow" (as in voting suffrage), not "be in pain," but the way it's written on the arch implies pain. Sick.
