Massive iron staircases....

...that become almost completely detached from their support system(s)?

How'd that happen?

You could interpret it as hostility of the house itself, a 'spiritual' manifestation, a potent hallucination, poor craftsmanship - though the house is quite old, or telekinesis.

Take your pick!

That's the part of the film that disturbs me the most. I'm afraid of heights anyways so the be up high on a wobbly staircase like that would be pretty scary for me.

I`ve been in one or two old buildings that have had metal stairs like that and they always creep me out a little thanks to this film.

Any plan that involves losing your hat is a BAD plan.

A lot of things creep me out as a result of this film - but, then again, I first saw the thing when I was seven.

You've mentioned not sleeping with your hands outside the covers, but what else? If you don't mind my asking, and feel like sharing. If you don't feel like it, that's fine too, so don't feel like you'd be offending me or anything.

I also have a fear of heights, so the scene with the loosening metal circular staircase get to me. Particularly the shot from Eleanor's POV when she's at the top. And then the trapdoor! 

"If you name it it will come for you." But seriously, mostly they're just things that have become psychological habit (like the hands under the covers which I intelligently rationalize as wanting to keep my hands warm.) I see where those strange little quirks have come from, however, when I watch the film again.

I just remembered one. I'm not sure if it's in both the movie and the book or what, but do you recall when Eleanor said she'd read that if you sleep on your left side, your heart will wear out more quickly? I think she said that's why she slept on her left side.

Anyway, for some reason that's stuck in my head all of these years, and I wish I could get rid of it, because I'm a side sleeper and too often I remember this when I'm sleeping on my left side! Thanks a lot for that one, Shirley Jackson 

...every time I roll over onto my left side.
It turns out that it DOESN'T wear out your heart, per a Yahoo science article I read a few weeks back on sleeping positions.

But the hands still go under the covers. Just sayin'.

 Okay, I should have admitted it's most times I sleep on my left side 

THANK YOU. Seriously. I've worried about it all of these years.
