What poem ?

The opening credits say this movie is based on a story by Lovecraft and a poem by Poe. Well, I do know "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward", but what poem is this based on ?

"Corman and his team originally started out making a straight adaptation of Lovecraft's novella The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (published posthumously in 1941) but then had the Poe title forced on them by AIP who were seeking to exploit a connection with Corman's Poe films. The Poe connection is tenuous to say the least - there is no palace in the film, nor really any haunting or anything to do Poe's 1839 mood poem, although Vincent Price gets to quote a couple of lines from it to justify the connection."

The poem is called "The Haunted Palace" just like the movie, and it's part of the story "The Fall of the House of Usher", in which the unnamed narrator reads it prior to Madeleine's rise from the grave.

Nude dancing always got to me. Much more enjoyment than Lon Chaney,Jr. in this tired sludge.

Nothing is more beautiful than nothing.

Heh... The Frying Bitchman strikes again...

And in the future, PLEASE try to refrain from mentioning Lon Chaney Jr. and Nudity in the same sentence...

Thank you...

I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!

HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Agreed!

In your opinion, what is the rarest and most OOP film you have? Would love to see it.

Hey Rory, thanks for asking!

Well, it's hard to narrow it done to just one. I'll mention a few that I can think of off hand, but I have like hundreds of obscure FILM NOIR, HORROR, & SCI FI that are hard to find or have never been commercially released. I'll list a few:

(Blu-ray) Criterion: 'THE THIRD MAN' (currently OOP and going used for upwards of $80-$100, which is ridiculous of course)

(Blu-ray) BLUE UNDERGROUND (I think) 'THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE' (GIALLO - currently OOP and going used for upwards of $60-$80 - same as above)

(Telefilm) MURDER BY NATURAL CAUSES (1976 - Excellent made for television Murder Thriller written by the renowned Levinson / Link team who did a lot of great films and television at the time)

(Telefilm) A COLD NIGHT'S DEATH (1973 - A great little suspenseful Horror film made for television staring Robert Culp and Eli Wallach about a research station in the Arctic where the scientists there had been killed mysteriously)

(Telefilm) ISN'T IT SHOCKING! (1973 - Very well written and acted Crime Suspense Telefilm staring an excellent cast including Alan Alda, Louise Lasser, Ruth Gordon, and many others. Very entertaining!)

(Telefilm) THE STRANGE POSSESSION OF MRS. OLIVER (1977 - nice little Mystery Thriller with Supernatural overtones starring the lovely Karen Black who is having strange memory flashes of a tragedy that may or may not have happened)

(DVD) TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE (GIALLO - film that was released but all versions had troubles with the sound. IMAGE Entertainment corrected the sound and was preparing to release their version, but it was never commercially released - I think due to legalities having to do with the commentary, but I'm not sure. You will NOT find this version anywhere because no one has it.)

And lots and LOTS of others that either have never been released commercially or are OOP and hard to find or have only been released in other countries (NOT the US) Along of course many other regular films that are more readily available.

The Haunted Palace
(1839)

by Edgar Allan Poe
(1809-1849)

In the greenest of our valleys
By good angels tenanted,
Once a fair and stately palace-
Radiant palace-reared its head.
In the monarch Thought's dominion-
It stood there!
Never seraph spread a pinion
Over fabric half so fair!

Banners yellow, glorious, golden,
On its roof did float and flow,
(This-all this-was in the olden
Time long ago,)
And every gentle air that dallied,
In that sweet day,
Along the ramparts plumed and pallid,
A winged odor went away.

Wanderers in that happy valley,
Through two luminous windows, saw
Spirits moving musically,
To a lute's well-tuned law,
Round about a throne where, sitting
(Porphyrogene!)
In state his glory well-befitting,
The ruler of the realm was seen.

And all with pearl and ruby glowing
Was the fair palace door,
Through which came flowing, flowing, flowing,
And sparkling evermore,
A troop of Echoes, whose sweet duty
Was but to sing,
In voices of surpassing beauty,
The wit and wisdom of their king.

But evil things, in robes of sorrow,
Assailed the monarch's high estate.
(Ah, let us mourn!-for never morrow
Shall dawn upon him desolate!)
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Is but a dim-remembered story
Of the old time entombed.

And travellers, now, within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows see
Vast forms, that move fantastically
To a discordant melody,
While, like a ghastly rapid river,
Through the pale door
A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh-but smile no more.
