This is actually my very first time catching this one - yet another Vincent Price Gem not to be missed ( IMPO I enjoy most VP films - can't get enough ! ) . Thanks to TCM for showing most of his movies all this month too .
I am! This is one I haven't seen many times, perhaps only 10, as it doesn't seem to be aired very often. I love the bow to HPL, having fallen in love with this master of the macabre when I was about 19, when college kids were "discovering" the Cthulhu Mythos writers.
I love TCM for giving us so many wonderful films, including every Thursday filled with Vincent Price. It helped me realize, as a 60+ film buff, how much I love this man's work and how amazing he was. I've heard people say he acts the same, but they are looney tunes! The subtlety with which he fashions each character is remarkable, whether the silver-haired, doomed Roderick Usher or the broken aristocrat who takes on the spirit of his malevolent father. There are so many other persona, and TCM had shown us the whole range throughout the month.
BTW: I was thrilled to finally tape a copy of "The Whisperer in Darkness" on Chiller Channel. If you love Lovecraft, this is a must-see; filmed in b&w and set in the past, it is a wonderful example of a Mythos tale. I feel that it would not be out of place on TCM someday.

Well hello again MystMoonstruck ! I believe you and I have chatted before about a year or so ago on another movie ( unrelated to Vincent Price films of course ) it was called " The House on Skull Mountain " from 1974 . Glad to see you here on this board and watching this movie on TCM tonight as well ( I so love this channel ! ) . Totally agree with you here Vincent Price was flawless in every role he has done ( and as you put it so perfectly " The subtlety with which he fashions each character is remarkable " ) . I have been a fan of his films since I was a teenager in the 1980's ( and also thought he was so excellent in Rod Serling's short lived TV Show " Night Gallery " too ) . VP certainly had it all - looks , talent , charm . I do have quite a few movies of his on DVD as well . Thanks MystMoonstruck for the movie recommendation ( " The Whisperer in Darkness " ) and your reply . Wonderful chatting with you again too and enjoy the rest of Vincent Price's movies tonight as well !
in my oldish age, I think he's certainly moved to the top favorites of actors who never disappoint me. I've seen him in every genre, including a couple of Westerns, and he's ALWAYS outstanding! I'm sure I had a big crush on him in my early teens, when he was in AIP's films. I don't think my family missed any of this, always going to the theater, as these films were considered quality enough not to be drive-in offerings (not that drive-in movies were "blah"!).
Poor Debra Paget and Vincent have a tumultuous time here, as they did in "The Ten Commandments", when he got her away from Edward G. Robinson, as I recall. At least she got back to John Derek in the latter. Poor Vincent rarely got to have a real romance though he started out as a matinee idol. Even in "Dragonwyck", he starts out a romantic lead, then... What a great role for him, another film opposite Gene Tierney ("Laura" and "Leave Her to Heaven" coming to mind).
Yes! I recall chatting about "The House on Skull Mountain", that nifty little film.
Yes, I do like his "Night Gallery" work! "The Return of the Sorcerer" is truly a great, creepy one with the help of Tisha Stirling. We even got a double Vincent=}
One biiiiig TCM treat was the non-horrific but very great part for him in "His Kind of Woman". He STOLE that movie from Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell as the ham actor! He's so CUTE when he's sitting there in the audience as they watch his swashbuckler fencing with the bad guy; he keeps glancing around at the others, smiling this proud, gleeful smile, wanting them to love it as much as he does. He's simply adorable in that movie, wanting to talk hunting and fishing with the guys and taking for granted his mistress AND, later, his wife. *giggle*
I hope you check out "The Whisperer in Darkness". There are no name actors, and I think that makes it less distracting. I think the lead is particularly good, the old man verrry creepy (that voice!), and the little girl, Hannah, endearing though I usually don't care for child actors too much. She did a great job. I made sure I had a brand-new tape this time, as the other time was a rather old one that had been used too much. I might watch that again tomorrow. Chiller Channel occasionally airs a good one!

Yes, I love Vincent Price also. I just finished "The Pit and the Pendulum" too.
Once I have had my fill of Vincent, I will watch Bela in the original 1931 "Dracula". I don't have to work tomorrow as it's records day and all my grades are in :)
It's nice to know there are others out there that like the old, spooky movies.
Wonderful gema6 " favorite actor themed movie marathons " are definitely my faves too ( so much fun to watch and don't forget to add the too ! ) . Thanks gema6 for your reply .
Excellent oystergirl94 and enjoy all the other VP Movies after this one on TCM late tonight . There is also one more VP Movie tomorrow morning at 8:15AM called " Theatre of Blood " from 1973 . Yet another unwatched gem for me to view which I will try to catch myself . Thanks oystergirl94 for your reply .
I passed out at the beginning of Twice-Told Tales, but I made it through Dr. Phibes (hilarious, AND creepy!). I just... I cannot describe how much I love that Vincent Price. Are you a big fan? :D
I always forget how good this movie is until I watch it again. What happend to Lon Chaney Jr and the other minion at the end? They are fighting with Price but we never see them after that unless it's a quick shot that I missed.

Well, it seems obvious that Charles is still possessed by Curwen when the film ends, so it is possible that while the doctor and wife were escaping, that Charles lost control again and became Curwen, sending his minions fleeing into secret tunnels to meet up at a later time. That's a natural assumption to be made, seeing that Price makes sure we know he is Curwen in that last shot of the film.
