Minority opinion
I know I'm in the minority here. Most critics rave about Tomb of Ligeia, and really pan this one. Sorry, but I think Ligeia is just ok, bordering on dull. This one is genuinely creepy, especially if you watch it at night!

shareI think The Haunted Palace is one of Vincent Price's best. Good, creepy Horror film worth repeated viewings.
"Good Lord! Can he really say, Bang my girlfriend on T.V.?"
I completely agree. This blows Tomb of Ligeia out of the water.
What's the Spanish for drunken bum?
I actually think they're pretty equal. Both scare me. "Haunted" has the death scenes and Price hamming it up. "Ligeia" has Hazel Court who scared the hell out of me as Ligeia. Both work very well just in different ways.
shareLike you I would have preferred to have seen Hazel Court in 'Haunted.' I've read that Corman wanted her for this film but A.I.P. had other ideas. Corman also wanted Ray Milland but I'm glad it was Vincent Price who got the role as I think he is at his best in 'Haunted.'

shareWell, they are really two different types of films, at least as far as style is concerned. This one is completely CLASSIC in setting and tone, whereas TOL was made a bit later and was deliberately slanted to a more 'Hip' audience as per the time.
Whenever I watch Coppola's excellent 'DRACULA', Gary Oldman's hip coloured glasses really remind me of Vincent Price in TOL...
So, people who really prefer a much more Classic style will of course like this one much better. Especially real traditional fans who really do NOT like modernized touches added to Classic Horror films. I will admit that the very first time I saw 'BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA' I really did NOT like it for that very reason. But, years later here recently I re-watched the nicely done Blu-ray, and I have to admit I really loved it! But there are a lot or people that don't like Classic type Horror films messed with...
I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!

I disagree with your opinion about Tomb of Ligeia, but I definitely agree with you on this one. I think this is the best of the Corman/Price/"Poe" (in quotations because this is a Lovecraft adaptation, as I assume most know by now) films and I think it remains 50 years later one of the best Lovecraft adaptations brought to the screen. A great mood is achieved throughout, Price gives one of his best performances and everything from the mutants to the score to the cinematography is top notch.
shareLovecraft is a little overrated, but yes this story is better.
