The plot is from Lovecraft and the title is from a Poe poem. AIP insisted on the Poe connection to capitalise on the recent Corman-Poe movies
As Goatboy says the story is from Lovecraft. They just set it in the Poe era. I think Corman wanted to use those period costumes from 'Premature Burial' again for economic reasons.
shareI want to see this movie, as I have just finished reading The Case of Charles Dexter Ward by Lovecraft. I have seen this before long ago, but I would like to watch it again now that I have read that most excellent short novel. It retains a lot of elements from the book, though the overall story is actually quite different from the synopsis I read.
As the others have said, though, the studio forced the use of a Poe title, which seems really absurd to me since it has NOTHING to do with Poe.
