Visconti should have adapted Anna Karenina!
what a work of genius he could have managed. sure the novel's not italian. but with Tolstoy's characters and pure empathy and Visconti's vision.

That wouldn't matter at all to Luchino. Visconti's first film Ossessione was adapted from James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice, an American novel that was recommended to him by his mentor, Jean Renoir. Then La Notti Bianche is an adaptation of Dostoevsky's Belye Nochi(White Nights) which is Russian, only he transferred it into a fantasyland post-war Italian city made on Cinecitta, the best scene of that film is at a dance hall where the music played is Bill Haley's 13 Women(and only one man in town).
So Visconti had no prejudices towards non-Italian culture.
Visconti's Anna Karenina would have been wonderful, but I'd rather see Visconti's The Kreutzer Sonata.
