Playing tonight, started watching for a few minutes. But then I realized it was the Italian version, with English subtitles. Not that I mind watching subtitles, but not being able to hear Burt Lancaster's performance was a letdown. I don't want to hear an Italian speaking his words, I want to hear Mr. Lancaster.
Sorry won't be watching this.
So Lancaster's impeccable body language and fine expressions, absolutely significant in this film and particularly in the final hour, mean nothing?

I thought Lancaster was amazing in this film but I missed the very end. Did the Prince collapse and die?
shareNo. There is a kind of death but not a literal one. He walks through the village after the ball, sees a priest rushing to perform last rites in a local household - we cut to Tancredi, Angelica, and Calogero, the new family, the new class, relaxingly affirm peace and stability at any cost - and the Prince walks off into a dark alleyway.

shareI agree. At first, it was annoying that Burt's mouth was clearly not making the sounds his character was speaking, but I got used to it. Still, it took away from the experience.
On a related point, I did notice one female character speaking French all the time, but no subtitles were provided. I can't figure out the point of that.
Maybe it's just me, but I found the subtitles that TCM used to be incredibly annoying. I had to squint to read the font during the outdoor scenes.
shareI actually had this issue with the subs too (and I rarely have trouble reading subs).
But I highly doubt it was TCM that provided the subtitles.
