The Damned

The Damned (Though it has some great scenes) doesn't stack up for me. It is as if Visconti was trying too hard to be contempary. Thoughts?

You're right, but try watching The Damned back to back with Salon Kitty to get a better version of Nazi decadence and Helmut Berger insanity.

The Damned is no doubt a very interesting film, and Helmut Berger's performance is deliciously diabolical.

But it's quite inferior to The Leopard, which is a masterpiece for the ages.

Visually, he tends to overuse the zooms in The Damned compared to The Leopard.

The Damned is nasty, sumptuous fun and happens to look great onscreen, nothing more.

Well...Fassbinder liked it.

Fassbinder WOULD like it.

I liked it about as well as The Leopard. It's definitely more over-the-top but dramatically powerful all the same. A very different movie, at any rate.
