I liked this movie. Was funny at times and I enjoyed it all the way.

While I was watching this movie I suddenly realised this was released in the 1960's. Cold war was on.
Then I realised how good/frightening would it have been to watch it back in the day.
I'm not going to state my age on here, but let's just say that I was still in high-school when I saw this film for the first time and I absolutely LOVED IT. My sister, who was the same age as me loved it too. We laughed so much all the way through it. It's so funny, dark and clever. One of Kubrick's best films.
Real is good. Interesting is better.

shareI am 24. I liked this movie, but i would not go for it being a masterpiece. In my opinion, not top 250 material, but still quite good (i just saw A LOT of movies in my short period on this earth so i got a lot to compare to and i got 250 that i liked more).
The comedy here seems to be pretty dry other for a few lines. but thats fine, good dry humor is still good. this seems like the 70s version of the modern parody comedy, and those sometimes turn out to be good.

I don't think of the comedy as dry. I think of it dark. As dark as a comedy can get. Pretty much everybody dies.
I think you also need a good appreciation for history and the whole MAD theory to really love this movie.

I'm 15. Have seen the most famous works by Kubrick (Full Metal Jacket, The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, loved them all) and now I just finished watching Dr. Strangelove. I enjoyed it, it was very funny and the lines were fantastic! The only complaint I have is regarding to the plane's exterior shots. My God, did they look fake. But I can't ramble about it, this movie was made in 1964. Overall, it was great. 8/10 for me. I sure loved the dozens of "quick zooms" Kubrick put, they were hilarious!
EDIT: Sin! I forgot to mention that I also saw A Clockwork Orange and Lolita. The first is one of my all-time favorite films, but I didn't care for Lolita.
The exterior plane shots were plenty impressive on the big screen, which is the format I watched the film in, in its original theatrical release. It was full of odd intellectual humor (and a bit of slapstick). One of my favorite lines was when the president says that only he has the authority to order a nuclear attack and Turgidson/Scott replies that, in this case, it would seem that General Ripper exceeded his authority. Subtle, wickedly funny stuff.
shareThe exterior shots of the B-52 must have looked impressive back when the film was new but I still wish they'd done a better job of lining up the B-52 model with the filmed background footage. A few of the shots show the plane sliding sideways along its course, something that wouldn't have happened in reality, not with a plane like that, at that speed. But what was even more impressive were the shots of the B-52's interior, including close-ups of what looked like highly classified (at the time) communications gear. I'm curious about what kind of hoops Kubrick had to jump through to be allowed this kind of filming inside one of the most important parts of our national defense system. It certainly looked very realistic to me. Or was this footage taken in an older (read: obsolete) plane? Anyone know?

And some people claim things are more artistic than they really are, because they try and elevate themselves by pretending others don't see it. Like the way people pretend the writing was clever, and it's really not at all.
If someone didn't find this funny, it's not because they didn't get it, it's because others are pretending this was a lot more clever than it really was.
that's the idea, art is defined by the person who looks at it, not by what it really is. you won't enjoy the same music your grandparent used to listen to, although your grandparent thinks is is the ultimate form of art. so it is all in the eyes of the beholder. but still some things are obviously beautiful and not noticing them is a deficiency on the person's side.
I'm not saying this movie is the masterpiece of all time but it is hard to take a delicate political issue in a comedy movie and manage to make it good. yes it is artistic.
Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying!
