Little bit of both I think...

Slower and not as scary as Psycho with a story line that just isn't as interesting. But this is still a good movie. The fact that it is often compared with Psycho is a shame... I think most would agree that Psycho is the best, or among the best and innovative horror movies ever (Personally, Halloween is my fave, which probably took a few pages out of Dementia and Psycho's books).

I wouldn't say scary or creepy, just kinda sorta well like a murder mystery if you will, you got a family will, and everyone is trying to get their hands on it, so I would say it's more of a who done it.

are you going to bark all day little doggie,, or are you going to bite

"50s melodramatic foo faw" ??

It's early-'60s, end-of-the-world creepy. But it's super-low budget.

To me, this seemed like an '80s slasher film just in black and white instead of color.

I've been waiting for you, Ben.

This movie is nothing at all like an 80s slasher movie.

Really? Because I just saw it for the first time and thought it obviously influenced slashers of the 70s and 80s. After all, it features a psycho with an axe in a spooky setting who intermittently murders people in the area.
