See but...
"Just a TV series" doesn't really apply here: the LeCarre novel is far too deep to have it really work in a 2-jour movie format. The TV version was a 6-hour miniseries, and it really delved into the story.
Additionally, whilst I really like Oldman as an actor, he simply can't compete with Alec Guinness. Guinness really researched out the part through the novel and in discussions with LeCarre, and the the character is so nuanced, you can watch the miniseries again and again, and see how Guinness really added Smiley's little foibles to the part.
Lastly, TV doesn't *have* to be inferior to film by definition. Not ever: compare *any* Sherlock Holmes movie to the Granada series of the 80's and 90's and you will see that. There has never been a better, more accurate, or more well-done version of Sherlock Holmes. (And to be frank, I absolutely love the new series "Sherlock," and Cumberbatch's Holmes, but the Jeremy Brett-series is far better.) Compare "Band of Brother" to any WWII movie - even "Saving Private Ryan" - and they all fall flat on their face.
