Dunno, waiting to see it now on Netflix, but it's going to have to go a long, long way to beat Alec Guinness' version.

Making the Peter Guilliam character gay is a major setback to begin with: it messes up the plot device of the later "Smiley's People," and I get the feeling they did it just to do it- to be current. There was little other reason for it, IMHO.

Tinker Tailor is an amazing film, among the best of 2011

I'm sure the Alec Guinness version is great, butin the end it's just a Tv series and therefore inferior to any film by definition

The director of Tinker Tailor looks pretty gay to me, so maybe he changed the character to make the film personal

Gary Old,an as Smiley rocks & the ending sequence is breathtaking

See but...
"Just a TV series" doesn't really apply here: the LeCarre novel is far too deep to have it really work in a 2-jour movie format. The TV version was a 6-hour miniseries, and it really delved into the story.

Additionally, whilst I really like Oldman as an actor, he simply can't compete with Alec Guinness. Guinness really researched out the part through the novel and in discussions with LeCarre, and the the character is so nuanced, you can watch the miniseries again and again, and see how Guinness really added Smiley's little foibles to the part.

Lastly, TV doesn't *have* to be inferior to film by definition. Not ever: compare *any* Sherlock Holmes movie to the Granada series of the 80's and 90's and you will see that. There has never been a better, more accurate, or more well-done version of Sherlock Holmes. (And to be frank, I absolutely love the new series "Sherlock," and Cumberbatch's Holmes, but the Jeremy Brett-series is far better.) Compare "Band of Brother" to any WWII movie - even "Saving Private Ryan" - and they all fall flat on their face.

Just one problem: it's not a spy story.

But I do adore Charade. I saw it as a child when it opened at Radio City. Loved it then, love it now.

"Charade is among the greatedt spy stories ever"? Please, tell me who were the spies and on whom did they spy?

Only two things are actually knowable:
It is now and you are here. All else is merely a belief.
