Stamp Collectors Out There ??

What were the stamps mentioned and what would be there present value? The only recognizable stamp on this website ... http://stamplove.tripod.com/ ... is the HAWAIIAAN stamp now valued at over .5m. Are the other stamp's value hard to ascertain because they have not come up for auction (as stated on website)? ...

from the trivia section:

SPOILER: The stamps depicted in the film are fictional counterparts of actual rare stamps, but have their values raised by one. The stamps they represent are the Swedish orange 3 skilling, the "Hawaiian Missionaries" 2 cent blue and the 81 para blue Romanian "cap de bour" on blue paper, in total worth about USA$3.6 Million in 2007.

Factual errors: Gluing valuable stamps onto an envelope greatly decreases their value

I wondered about this when i watched the movie

reply

Stamp collecting is so silly. Baseball cards are much more fun.

reply

Perhaps. As a kid, I know I'd get way more enjoyment with my baseball cards, but as collectibles, stamps have held heir value. The bottom has fallen out of the baseball card market.

reply

That makes me feel a little better about not having saved my baseball card collection from the fifties.

reply

I did too. But can't mounted stamps be removed through steam or something like that? I seem to remember that's a trick to use if you accidentally put one on an envelope and wanted to undo it.

But I don't know if even then, the value would depreciate.

reply

Ordinarily stamps that have never been mounted with a stamp hinge and have original undamaged gum (mint condition) are much more valuable than unused stamps that have been even lightly hinged.

This is not really true for stamps which are great rarities or unique (only one exists) Very old and rare stamps are very likely to have been hinge mounted as they were in collections long before hingeless mounts were invented. For these stamps there would be no mint stamps out there to compete with the stamp with damaged or no gum.

reply

Stamps of an age as depicted in the movie didn't have gum. They had to be glued to the envelope with extra glue. AFAIK, none of the first stamps exists in "unused" condition.
