cary grant's fitness

Just watched this classic again on TMS - it has aged extremely well - it just dawned on me that for a 59-60 year old man Cary Grant was remarkably fit - he does a lot of running and stair climbing in the last scenes - something most men of his age could not do - ( I know you are going to say they are short scenes but there are extended scenes of his running and it didn't look like a double)

I thought the exact same thing when watching the other day, its definitely him in the long shot at the subway, I mean fitness for one but the guy doesn't look nor act like a 60 year old in it either!

Some of it was genetic, some of it was because he was a rich movie star(that keeps your health up), but Cary Grant was an early proponent of exercise and diet. I don't think he jogged, but he swam in a pool regularly and worked out.

Nonetheless, for those running scenes, Grant asked director Stanley Donen to make sure the camera was set up and everything was ready because..."I won't do multiple takes of those runs."

I didn't get to check out his physique, so it's good to know he looked fit. I was surprised to read this in the trivia section last night: It was agreed that Cary Grant would not remove his shirt in the shower scene since he was nearly sixty and slightly overweight.

That sheds some light on why he showered in his suit. Loved that scene 

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

I also realize now that that's why Audrey tore Grant's shirt when "Regina" was tending to his wounds, rather than removing it completely, which is why I laughed out loud tonight when I watched it.

(paraphrasing)

Grant: "Did you hear something rip?"

Audrey: "No."

 That was probably ad-libbed or thrown into the script at the last minute.

I agree. As a young man before he became a film star, Cary Grant had been a circus performer doing a routine on stilts. This explains his extremely good coordination as well as his fitness. By coordination I mean watch the way he balances and moves during the fight scene with George Kennedy, on the roof. He is always perfectly poised...not many men could do it that well.
