Colonel Parker should have backed off and let Elvis play Conrad Birdie

Especially if Elvis had enough of a sense of humour to take the pi$$ out of himself. It probably would have been remembered as a great classic.

Well Elvis DIDN'T have enough of a sense of humor to take the piss out of himself!

And he didn't want to be a supporting player, or the guy who loses the girl at the finale. He wanted to be a movie STAR, to play the alpha guy who gets the girl... and not expand his range as an actor.
