passing a joint?

I'm watching this on TCM right now and something caught my eye that I hadn't noticed before. During the scene in Big Daddy's when Dick Dale and the DelTones are playing (just before Eric Von Zipper comes in), Frankie passes a cigarette to DeadHead... but it doesn't look like a regular ciggy. He's holding it more like a joint.

Was this a quick, "inconsequential" jab at straight society? Just wondering if someone else noticed this or saw it as I saw it.

I'm a big fan of these films, seen them dozens of times.I agree that it looks like they are passing a joint.Whether it was or not I think they are implying that although assuming not many people would pick up on it in 1963,especially "parents" seeing the film.Like you I noticed it more recently.I was 11 in '63.Ned Wynn wrote a book a while ago and implyed that the extras smoked pot,not suprising if you think about it.Any way I've also noticed something recently,in the scene betwen Annette and the Blond on the beach just before the "Secret Surfing Spot "number. The blond looks stoned! It's really funny when you think of it because DeDe is the classic "good girl" and the blond is trying to tell her to loosen up."If somebody had wild plans for me why stop 'em?" This is a classic moment of the "Hippie Chick" confronting a more "traditional values" type.I just thought of this when replying to another post about the "your not even a woman" line which I think refers not to DeDe's age but her virginity. Also in the club scene you're talking about there is a shot where Frankie really looks stoned watching Candy shake her fringe during the Dick Dale nuumber. Ross

That's funny you mention this. I just saw the movie on TCM and thought the same thing when I saw that scene. The way the cigarette is passed made me think it was a joint, too.

Good to see it wasn't my imagination!

I watched it on TCM also and noticed that for the very first time.
I think it was a joint or was supposed to look like one.

Just saw that scene on TCM and came on here to ask the same thing. Never noticed it when the movie was "new" when I was a kid, but that's what it looks like!

"And me? I go on to become a big star in Italian Westerns."

maybe is only a cigarrete

Although it looks likes he's passing a joint, I
think it's only a cigarette. Many guys held their
cigarettes like that back then. Seemed more manly.
Or something.

That bit caught my attention too!

That's the only moment we see Frankie smoking anything, isn't it?

I'll bet that, if it wasn't a joint, that the filmmakers were pleased to have the audience draw the association such that it *might* look like a joint was being passed.

Big Daddy's was all beatnik vibe, party-party-party naughtiness and wild behavior. Passing a joint would fit right in at Big Daddy's.

Frankie (not Annette) is the one who misbehaves throughout this silly story. He would be the one to pass a joint in this dumb tale, wouldn't he?

Annette is too much of a chaste goody-goody in this. Frankie is a total dweeb. He should have counted himself lucky with the Eva Six character.

I've never seen anyone pass a "straight" cigarette like that. I feel sure it was a joint and because of the nature of the movie it got past the censors. And I agree that the blonde on the beach definitely looks stoned. I noticed this years ago and I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed.

I just noticed this for the first time. Looked like a doob to me.

Plus the beer, and the cigarette smoking in the background - seems like things were a little looser in this movie. Or a little more real.

Not manly. Just hand-rolled. No glue to hold it all together.

Apart from the saliva of the guy who rolled it.

Most likely, in real life, it was a cigarette. Even if a hand-rolled one. MJ possession was treated very seriously then, and it's unlikely they would've depicted it on the big screen in a teen film.

However, they probably intended it to *look* like a joint. As an inside joke for those "sophisticated" enough to catch it. After all, it *is* basically a beatnik scene.

And if you think about it, people don't usually pass around a cigarette. Even broke teens.
