Why did Rufe Davis (Floyd) eave?

I just watched the season 6 premier and they have a new conductor--Wendall Gibbs. I know that the guy which played Charlie died and Ffloyd continued running the Cannonball by himself, but I thought he stayed til the show ended.

Apparently, Rufe had health issues as well. Linda Kaye Henning mentioned this in the Return To Hooterville DVD when talking about the passing of Smiley and Bea. But, Rufe did come back for a handful of episodes.
