Leaving ME-TV as of 8/31

To be replaced with "Gilligan's Island" (preceded by - groan - "Welcome Back Kotter" and followed by "Family Affair").

Welcome Back Kotter while not high brow was not bad. Family Affair was pure boredom and worse than PJ which every so often had something interesting happen such as Homer Bedloe showing up.

Neither were my favorites, Biff, but I would lean toward Family Affair if I were to watch either series again.

Family Affair had Mr. French, whose reaction to the children and how his world was turned upside down in caring for them, were the highlights of this series. Sebastian Cabot was a fine actor who could well have helped numerous series had he been given a chance.

Welcome Back Kotter was an extension of a 20-minute nightclub routine. By the time you had seen a couple of episodes, you had seen almost all of the jokes. They just kept repeating them over and over: "Oooh, oooh, Mr. Kotter, Mr. Kotter" and "Up Your Nose with..." etc. Maybe I was troubled because all of the students looked old enough to be teachers instead of high schoolers.

They were series I watched before I had a satellite dish, before I had a VCR/DVR, and before I got more choosy about what to watch on TV. While there might be some enjoyment from visiting those old friends, I cannot imagine wanting to go through more than a couple of episodes of either of those series again. There are just so many other shows that were/are funnier or otherwise more enjoyable to watch.

It's currently showing on RetroTV, but like their broadcasts of The Beverly Hillbillies", the network didn't pay for the music rights. The theme song, and in some cases if the theme is in the background in the show itself, it's replaced with generic banjo music.

Retro didn't pay for anything - they are showing just the episodes that have fallen into the public domain.
