What is Kate's relation to Uncle Joe?

I can't remember if it was ever explained. Was he her brother-in-law? I guess calling him "Uncle" Joe was a term of endearment, since that is what the girls called him.

reply

At various times on the show they introduced him to others as both Kate's uncle and the girls' uncle. I assume he was really the girls' great-uncle because I believe there were times when Kate herself introduced him as her own uncle.

reply

Oh OK. I wasn't sure. Kate and Joe look to be about the same age. Of course, with aunt/uncles and nieces/nephews, they don't have to be far apart in age, but I didn't think he was an actual uncle. (I guess I was thinking it was kind of like Jed calling Granny "Granny" in The Beverly Hillbillies. She wasn't his grandmother, but it was something everyone knew her by.)

My mom and her mom both came from large families, so my mom has aunts and uncles who are only a few years older than her and nieces and nephews who are only a few years younger. Also, my siblings and I call one of her aunts "aunt" ourselves. This aunt is one is the younger ones who was more like a cousin to her because of their ages.

FInally saw one where she called him uncle. In 1.10, Bedloe Strikes Again, when the townspeople are mad at losing football coach Joe, Kate calls him "my uncle, the coach." Later, Joe says "My niece Kate."

reply

Yes, kind of odd that he was Kate's uncle, as they were about the same age.

reply

Bea was playing younger on this show. Clearly he's her uncle and the girls' great uncle. I know once he mentioned he was Cathy Jo's great great uncle.

reply

Agreed on playing younger. Just didn't look younger and seemed of same generation as Uncle Joe to me.
