One of the most iconic show opens in TV history and Comet has the audacity to edit half of it out. Is nothing sacred? But TVs don't have a vertical or horizontal hold any more. Maybe they didn't understand the intro.
They obviously wanted to make space for more commercials. Most one hour TV shows in the 60's had an average run time of 49-50 minutes and the other 10 minutes allotted for commercials. Today it is down to 41-42 minutes of actual show per hour.
By editing out most of the intro they save 2 or 3 minutes which can be used for more commercials. Same reason for editing some of the actual episode. SAD!
BBC America is currently running the Original Star Trek episodes. In order to get their requisite number of commercials they set the schedule so that each episode is 1 hour and 10 minutes (the ten minutes being extra commercials). It looks funny on my program guide to see one start at 7:20 PM. But at least they are not cutting any of the actual episode itself.
