Lieutenant Chung, the Chinese Crewman

I thought it interesting Hersey included a Chinese-American character (LT Chung) as an officer and navigator of one of the planes and featured him relatively prominently with a speaking part. Hersey was born in China and lived there until his family returned to the U.S. when he was 10. Because he was fluent in Chinese, his employer later sent him there as a war correspondent during the early years of WWII. He had happy descriptions of his time in the country and clearly wanted to depict a positive Chinese-American Army Air Corps officer in the story. If this was noticed by American audiences when the movie came out in 1962, I can’t find any reference to it on the internet. The character was played by a young Burt Kwouk, the Chinese-British actor who later had the legendary role of “Cato Fong” in six of the Pink Panther movies.
