Shirley Anne Field

Does anyobody agree with me that Shirley Anne Field was one of the most beautiful of all British film actresses of the 1960's ?. It was such a pity and a waste of her talent - and remarkable beauty, that she wasn't used to better
effect by British - and American film producers of the period. I'm sure that with better roles she could have become a major British star.

There was something strange about her acting in this movie she didn't seem real, a bit stilted I thought.
The closing sequence with her and Wagner was dreadful. McQueen carried this movie along with excellent aerial sequences.

I agree with you pullgees. While Shirley Anne Field looks beautiful, she acts poorly. I don't think it can be attributed to her showing British reserve, like someone has claimed. There's just something not right about her performance.

And like you said, Steve McQueen deserves a lot of credit. I especially like how he portrays a very troubled, flawed fighting man, but someone with whom I still sympathize.

I was channel-surfing recently and saw her in this old weird b+w UK movie. She was in a gang, led by a young Oliver Reed, who terrorized the people of this English seaside town with their street antics. It had a wild 60's rock-and-roll soundtrack and Shirley was looking sexy as a black sweater clad vixen, slinging slangy, obnoxious, early hippie trash-talk to the local gentry. Quite the naughty girl ! I was enthralled !

I think it was called "These Are The Damned," and it was made right after she did "The War Lover."

Shirley Anne Field did turn in a poor performance in this film, but i'm pretty sure there was another actress cast in the role when shooting began, who had to pull out when she found out she was pregnant; leaving Ms. Field to step in very late in the day, with barely enough time to prepare & flesh out her part properly.
