Who made the phone call?

A great movie! But one thing puzzled me and my partner when we saw this on TCM.... who was it that made the phone call telling Dove where to find Hallie? And why did she make the call? I guessed that this was "Precious", trying to do a good deed for Hallie who had been kind to her (?), but this didn't seem clear in the movie. Or did we miss something obvious?

I don't think it was Precious because it didn't sound like her. I suspect it was just meant to be an anonomyous call from one of the other whorehouse girls.

I wondered that, too. The voice honestly sounded like Jane Fonda's to me, but that doesn't fit with the story because she acted surprised about Hallie.
Maybe it was Jane's voice but we were supposed to think it was some random woman from the brothel.

It could have been anyone in the French Quarter who knew her. He put her whole name "Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Hallie Gerard, please contact Dove Linkhorn at (phone number)." She was such a classy whore, I'm sure she was well known in the Quarter. Personally I think her husband called or arranged for someone to call. He still loved his wife Jo and was probably hoping that someone would come take Hallie away. He was the one that brought it up to Jo that someone was running the ad every day. He hated that he couldn't make love to her because his legs were missing.
