What's up with the scene when Fonda and Harvey hop the train? (7:30 min.) Fonda mentions her name and Harvey says: "Where'd you get a name like--". Then both of them look to left-screen, her line of dialogue is muted, and as she goes to sit down beside him her dialogue is not clear under the train whistle. Was their attention diverted by another person in the boxcar? I was expecting a shot of somebody already in the boxcar.
Then, at the 39:30 min. mark, Harvey enters the restaurant and asks: "Anybody call today?" and Baxter replies: "Nobody." Then as he draws a cup of coffee, you can hear the sound effect of the cup filling, but his dialogue is edited. It appears his dialogue continued over the shot of Baxter walking over to him. Then his dialogue resumes.
Was this the final edit and released like this, or is this some kind of unfinished print? Pretty sloppy editing, as is. If the scenes had been alterered or they just decided on a change, you think they would have cut the visual in both scenes.
This was the first time I had seen WOTWS. What a howl! Capucine was very good. Fonda looked deadly. Stanwyck was Stanwyck--great! Baxter? Bad accent. Did she learn that at the Copacabana School of the Dramatic Arts?

I also noticed the shot where Laurence Harvey is getting coffee and his lips are moving but there is no sound of his voice.

Yeah, I was like "What the...?" when I saw those scenes. I'm assuming it's the final edit, because it just wouldn't make sense for them to add those edits later. Unless it was a bad attempt at censoring or something, and if that's the case those were two weird spots to put in edgy dialogue.

I agree about Baxter's accent- she tried, but yuck. She sounded a little like Catherine Zeta Jones' character in Zorro to me.

Yes, I agree. Very sloppy editing; and I did notice where his mouth moved but nothing was on the soundtrack. Very strange.

No, no..."cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

I think you guys may have gotten a bad copy? I just saw the film last night and didn't see any glitches like you mentioned. That scene on the boxcar, she was explaining her nickname Kitty Twist, her real last name was -- I forget now, but she did say it. The other kids in the orphanage gave it to her because it was easier to pronounce.

The only bit I had trouble hearing was the scene much later with Capucine and the older man whom she treats contemptuously.
