Fantastic film - why isn't it better known?

I've read several reviews which make the film sound campy and bizarre (not that either of those qualities is necessarily bad), but I found it an absorbing drama with great atmosphere and a fine score (sung by Brook Benton no less).

The uninhibited, energetic performance by Jane Fonda alone is enough to recommend it. Not to mention another fine, and overlooked, performance by the criminally neglected Laurence Harvey.

Hi

The title song would be enough for me to check it out. My mom had some records/albums by Mr. Benton, so that song drew me to the flick when I ran across it on TCM years ago. The story however isn't new, even with the same sex theme. It boils down to obsession/possession.

she loved poetry and romance, but she hit the glass ceiling at birth

A Walk on the Wild Side is a very watchable, well-crafted, guilty pleasure.
