NOT FOR ME....

OK..I realize I"ll be disliked for saying this, but what's the big deal about this movie? Saw it when it first came out, didn't like it...saw it again on TCM, still didn't like it......

for me it's just a plain old story about a white lawyer defending a black man accused of rape.....then the 'adventures' of the neighborhood kids..... and???

so please fill me in, before you tear me to pieces on my opinion...lol......sure it was good acting, etc, but overall praise, etc. this movie/book have received over the years leaves me amazed!!!

so please tell me what's so great about this thing.....and please, no nasty replies; I really want to know what it is that I don't 'get' about this thing!!!!!!

reply

For me it's the innocence of the children mixed with the bitterness of racism in the south prior to the civil rights movement. For me the movie, much like the book, is mostly about Scout. While Atticus may be the hero of the film it was Scout who was the conscious of the silent majority.

reply

It's about the universal experience of being a child, and discovering that adults really suck! The details come from the Jim Crow South, but the emotions the children experience are familiar to everyone. All the best movies have that kind of universal appeal.

Although not everything the children experience is universal, the kids in this film actually have one adult in their lives that they can admire, who stands up for both the law and justice, and childhood ideas of fairness. Not everyone had th hat growing up, but everyone wishes they had.

Plus, it's a damn good movie.

reply

WOW......I admire your seeing that in this film; I must be a real nut not to have seen this, so thanks for enlightening me.....but I guess it' just one of those movies that I 'don't get and don't like"........but thanks for your insights...to each their own, right?

reply

I totally get it, there are films that are great but that just don't appeal to me on a personal level, like the "Godfather" movies. And then there are films that are objectively terrible but which DO appeal to me on a personal level, like "Aquaman", and films which are both great and appealing, like "Casablanca".

Film appreciation is both objective and subjective, but really mostly subjective. The feelings are just so personal.

reply

what a thoughtful reply,,,,and you are so right!!! I was bored to death in all 3 Star Wars......why the heck did I see them when I hated the first one so much??? LOL.....

anyway, I read reviews, say, in Netflix DVD and wonder ...'jeeze' did they see the same movie I did? then someone praises something I didn't like...........but you are so right......thanks again!!!

reply

It's a pretty good movie. For some, it's a profound movie because it teaches the difficult-to-grasp lesson that it's wrong to accuse somebody of a crime he didn't commit. Holy moly, who woulda thought of that?!

reply

You have a right to say you didn't like it. That's your choice. Not everyone will like everything. There are "classics" of cinema that I do not like.

reply

I always liked it but in light of how radical the left has become with its monstrous BLM and Antifa, I doubt I will watch this movie again.

reply

I'm guessing the left would find fault with the movie somehow. The fringe of all the political mainstays seem to excel in hating something about everything that isn't born of their meager movements.

reply

It's happened. A recent news article reported that the book was removed from a school reading list because it made some people "uncomfortable". That's ironic, considering the anti-racist theme of the story.

reply

I had read the book (multiple times) before ever seeing the movie. While I thought the movie was done well, I was a bit disappointed. So much of the story was left out, which I can understand because with a film there is a time limit of around two hours in which to tell the story.

The only way to do the novel justice would be to present it as a miniseries. It would probably have a total run-time of about ten hours.

reply

That's an unusual way to experience both these days. Most people would see the film first (I did, and loved it) before reading the book (which I have a few times and loved). I agree it's almost impossible to film a book without some trimming but in this case the film is so good I suspect a miniseries would inevitably disappoint.

reply

Just because you don't like TKAM doesn't mean that you are a bad person. Personally, I liked it, and re-watch it from time to time.

I dislike a couple of films that others greatly admire (Arlington Road, and 2001:A Space Odyssey). I was called all sorts of names for saying that, as some felt that EVERYBODY just had to love these absolutely GREAT pictures and if you didn't there was something wrong with you.

As I say, I loved TKAM, but I don't demand that everyone like it just because I think it is a great film.

You're entitled to your opinion.

reply

Good response!

I love 2001. but I'd never get upset with someone for not loving it, and I wouldn't insult them by saying they're too dense or dumb to get it. It's always & finally a matter of personal taste in these things.

reply

Thank you.

Another example might be the 1994 ABC miniseries, The Stand. I loved it but some hated it. Instead of attacking them, I spoke to them in a reasonable manner and for the most part, we had good conversations.

reply

I agree with the op. Nothing special, and odd how it is so highly prsised.

I call this a 'emperors clothes' film.
