A great film

Even though some people didn't like this film I really enjoyed it.I think Brando's Christian is unique and a fresh approach. Is the film being released on DVD? Anyone with any info please let me know.

I just got the original 1935 and on that dvd is a the original trailer from the 1962 version. Lets hope the dvd for this is not far behind.

I'm one of those people who didn't really like the remake too much. The thing that irritated me most was Brando's awful attempt at sounding English. Having said that, it's certainly very watchable but too long. As far as I know, the studios aren't planning on releasing the 1962 version yet. My advice would be to keep checking Amazon.com and see if it's up for release in the future. In the meantime, why not watch "The Bounty" 1984? This is definitely available on DVD. Anthony Hopkins is great as Captain Bligh and the cinematography is breathtaking. Hope this helps you a little bit.

You didn't like the remake, but you liked the original...I didn't like either. I though the movie was boring. Maybe because I was forced to watch it during tech class.

Yes...I did like the original, thought the remake (with Trevor Howard & Marlon Brando) was too long and Brando was miscast. I can't fault Howard's performance of Captain Bligh though.

As for enjoying neither....well, you don't *have* to enjoy every movie....especially if you're forced to watch it.

I had to sit through North to Alaska when I was at school. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. Perhaps head teachers should dig up interesting stuff for when they give you your "Saturday Night Treat."

In 1962 a movie could not be made which showed topless women. How can one possibly realistically show Tahiti without topless women? Well, you can't. Until the modern film code came into effect a movie depicting the mutiny was pretty much hopeless. I agree, "The Bounty" (1984) was much better; and besides Mel Gibson is sexier than Marlon Brando.

What a brilliant film – Trevor Howard made it with his terrific portrayal of Bligh, and Brando was also great (apart from the ridiculous stories of his indulgence on set).

I gave this film an 8 - and I don't give out 8's very often.

Definitely not! Please read my posts above. Remember that I'm only offering an opinion.

Life is just one damned troublesome thing after another.

To be honest, I rarely prefer remakes,,,,,,however, I really feel this is a superior film to the Gable version (which I also think is great),,,,,
I think this film is one of the more underrated in film history actually,,,,IMO, it is a classic,,,

p.s. I also think the Gibson/Hopkins version is absolute crap for the most part.

I agree , this is a great film and much better than the Gibson version , especially the Tahiti sequences (Gibson version) which for some strange reason were all filmed in semi-darkness. Both Brando and Howard are very good - the last great film Brando was in until he made the Godfather. People who say it's boring only think so because they can't sit through decent dialogue and storyline without wanting things blow'd up.

Well said. I would only add that unlike the Gable/Gibson "hero"-type of interpretation, Brando gives us an intelligent character who actually thinks before he acts ... and we are left standing outside this version of the story unless we do some thinking ourselves about the contradictory options and implicit consequences this character faces. Now that we can see all of Brando's films, this one continues to grow in stature as an extraordinarily personal artistic statement from the century's greatest actor. Was Brando's immediately previous experience in both directing and acting in "One Eyed Jacks" (another exemplary film, 1961) part of his motivation in taking what had been intended (by the studio) as a "safe, Hollywood" film into the far more dangerous waters of serious ideas? Just a thought.

I know that Brando was only interested in the film if it included the post mutiny scenes involving the fate of the mutineers. This would seem to suggest a a more wholistic interpretation of the Christian character. As in all Brando's performances subtext is everything. Also One Eyed Jacks is my favorite Brando movie.

The forthcoming DVD of "Mutiny on the Bounty" will be a restored print of the original 70mm version of this film. I've seen a bit of it on TCM, and it looks great. "One Eyed Jacks" ... much like "Mutiny" ... is both exceptionally good and beautiful, a film that begs for the kind of restoration that "Mutiny" has finally been given. Perhaps when "Mutiny" finally becomes available, it will help fire up interest in a quality DVD of "Jacks."

Personally, I think that the Gibson version is more historically correct, I'm not even considering the topless girls, that's to be expected that they couldn't get away w/ it before 1984. I loved the '35 version and Gable, but Christian had his faults and that didn't really come across because it was Gable.
I think that the importance of Gable and Gibson not thinking before they acted is that Christian most likely didn't think before he acted. He was totally irrational in the hours before the mutiny and even contemplated suicide. Historians believe that Christian had borderline personality disorder. Christian realized the futility and insanity of his mutiny about halfway through and that's why he told Bligh that it was "too late" acording to one of the shipmates who returned to England.
I really did not like Brando in this role...the way he came on board as a dandy. Christian wasn't a dandy; his family wasn't wealthy, and that's why he went to sea. The death of Fletcher also bothered me, I seem to remember a fire? It's been awhile please correct me if I'm wrong...Christian was shot while working in the garden, and I think that by not showing the mutineers on Pitcairin the '35 and '84 version are doing better thing because they weren't taking liberties in embelishing things that most likely didn't happen.
Honestly, Brando didn't convince me that he was admired or loved by the men. I was rooting for Bligh in this one because I wouldn't want to deal with Brando's Christian on my ship either.

Hi, there are many versions of how Christian died, clubed , shot, hanged in his cave, I see what you mean about the dandy but remember Brando was promised a free hand in this epic but this was not fourthcoming , he wanted to do it his own way but could not fight MGM, this is why he played up so much, he never liked the way Chistian was portrayed. I never liked the Gibson version or the old classic much, its all a quetion of individual taste. we still don't really know what happend, perhaps we never will. all I know is I myself love Brando's film. nice talking about it to you though.

reply

I love reading about the mutiny and all the different theories about why it happened, I think it's interesting how the different versions portray the same events in different manners.
I thought it was really cool that Brando married the tahitian girl that Christian marries in the '35 version, kinda a funny coincidence.

Me too, I have always been interested in the Bounty, there is a site for it have a search, its great , the ship from the film has just been restored to full glory, if you type in HMS Bounty, you will find it theres a links page that takes you to Pitcairn as well, bye for now.

I just watched this movie for the first time, and I agree with you. It was just great. What great actors! The cinematography was beautiful as were the sets, costumes, musical score and screenplay. I have learned that this film was not well-received and that great controversy surrounded it as it was being made. I am glad that posterity has been so kind to it. A real work of art is rarely appreciated in its own time.

reply

The movie was indeed very entertaining, but please do yourself a huge favour and go to the library and get The Bounty by Caroline Alexander. This is a well researched history of the whole incident, including the capture, court marshall and hanging of the three convicted mutineers.

reply

I absolutely agree too.I first saw this movie as a youngster on it's initial release in the UK,and have always thought it top-class on every subsequent viewing. As you rightly observe, all aspects of the film are excellent. And it is better than the other versions because it has a literate, intelligent screenplay, and is not just another "Adventure" movie.Oh!And I'm not surprised that Brando married Tarita!

Its a great movie. I LOVED it. Every second of it.

Brando's Christian is fantastic. An instantly likeable character.

I checked out the other versions of this story and I didn't like them at all.

I found the 1984 pure crap.

Seriously, after watching guys like Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard and Richard Harris in this movie, the other versions looked very amateurish and sad.

That's MHO.
