Popped in Crowe's epic yesterday and began yawning and yearning for Mutiny, where a conflict actually exists, challenging my brain more than exploding wood close-ups. Fifty two years later and the photography was actually worse in M&C-horrible day for night and really every nighttime shot and overdone lantern lighting. Only Crowe's voice would find a place in the quality Mutiny. Did anyone else react similarly to M&C?
"Master and Commander" are two different movies. M&C is more of a character study, and although you can make a case for the same description of MOTB, it is definitely an adventure story, and a true one at that. I loved M&C, and I loved "Billy Budd" and "Damn the Defiant" each for a different reason. I cannot understand why the 1962 version of MOTB is so villified. I thought it was the best of the three versions; cinematography was better, the storyline was closer to the truth, and Marlon Brando was superb as Christian. One of the funniest scenes I've ever seen him play was when Capt. Bligh ordered him to the island to make love to the king's daughter. The comedic undertones of that scene were played to perfection in my opinion.
Master and Commander is by far the better movie Brando's MOTB is very boring,I just couldn't get in to it at all.I have seen Master and Commander several times and just bought the DVD.Russell Crowe is outstanding as usual but I doubt any other actor around could have done it.I just didn't buy Brando in this at all.
Master and Commander was an incredible movie; I loved the sense of camaraderie among the crew, the performances of Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany, and the amazingly authentic look and feel to the whole production.
I found a LOT of comedic undertones in this film, which I'm sure is one reason I enjoyed it so much. You know it's a good movie when you're not laughing at the obvious jokes as much as you're appreciating the personality clashes - that shows you the characters are well-defined. I'm not a big fan of Brando, so I haven't gone out of my way to see his films; so it was a nice surprise to see him in a role that made me laugh. Even though it might have been a type of gallows humor.
Yes, it was very well scripted, you know I saw this in 1962, and every time its on tv I have to see it again, many of the quotes from the script have stayed with me, but I cant remember one word of "Master & Comander", and Ive seen that 3 times in the last year.
Yes, as much as I admire Russell Crowe's skill as an actor, this movie was very boring and disappointing. I kept waiting for something to happen, and nothing ever did!
This movie is basically a series of scenes, with little to connect them.
I think Russell Crowe would have made an excellent Fletcher Christian - better than Brando. JMO!
i don't know. i have serious doubts about Master and Commander. i am so surprised that this film was the result of Marlon Brando's downfall. the film went over budget and he was blamed by MGM when the film failed the box office. anyway what is so special about money. oh, well dummmmddduuuuummmmm, mmmmaaaaddddd wooooorrrrrlllllllddddd, dummmmmdddduuuuummm, maaaaaaddddd wooooorrrrrllllddddd.
The main similarities in comparing the two films is the relatonship between men, sailors, with diverging interests/ambitions. In that both films excel. One film explores a mutiny and what it means to be a captain. The other explores service of the crown and country versus service in the name of science, which might be taken for truth.
