Trevor Howard
The best actor in the movie.
shareMarlon Brando's my favourite actor and I thought he was superb in this film however I do agree with you. Trevor Howard does not play Bligh as a sadist or monster and the character is far more believable(if still historically inaccurate)than in the earlier version. The personality clash with Christian is also more believable in that Bligh is quite right to be irritated with Christian in the opening scenes because of Christian's poor attitude.
shareAgreed. The film portrayed Bligh as having some "right" on his side. His attitude was that of a man who struggled to gain his naval status, while Christian, the dandified fop, was born into the world of success. The class conflict is a major pillar of the screenplay. It makes Bligh, for all his cruelty, understandable in human terms.
shareI agree. I'm watching it now. He's amazing.

In fact a captain that has to so do, has not gained his captaincy in any true sense. I thought the speech of the chief admiral after Bligh's acquittal was telling. They knew he had acted improperly and not as a captain.
Away with the manners of withered virginsshare
The history of Navies and Merchant Marines are pretty ugly what with press- ganging and shanghaing men. 'Naval Law' was supposed to be its own thing so that they could do whatever they wanted at sea.
If there is ever a re-make of Master & Commander, they really must put in the real reason for 'cabin boys'--it was NOT doing the scut work.

My favorite scene in the movie was when Bligh had to dance with the King's daughter. At First he was so stiff and uncomfortable, but when he started getting into it he was awesome! Trevor Howard did a terrific job.

Howard was excellent. While Charles Laughton’s Bligh is a great screen monster, Howard finds humanity in the role and is almost equally impressive.
I did also enjoy Brando’s performance once I adjusted to the accent, but Howard - always a professional and polished actor - makes the movie.
