A great comedy, first and foremost

It's the comedy that holds it all together, not the songs and not the romance. The conflict between Harold Hill and the stubborness of the town of River City. It's a great comedy formula that works completely. Pure comedy gold. Enjoy.

There is no "off" position on the genius switch.

As for the romance, your mileage may indeed vary. But I happened to like it very much. :)

The romance was quite unique. Very touching AND hilarious, at the same time. Two highly intelligent people, acting like idiots, helped along by the loopy townspeople. Highly unusual and very effective. A wonderful mixture of romance, song, and comedy, all in one musical.
