Anyone else thing her accent and manner of speaking strange in this movie? It kind of drives me bonkers - it sounds halfway English one minute and then oddly, formally American the next. Based on what little is on her page here and most of that info is on her chat board, she seems to be American, but still, her accent is odd and jars. I'm guessing this was the result of how she was directed?

Have you ever noticed Gracy Shinn? She is the mayor's younger daughter. The one who jumps up and points out Tommy Djilas as the one who lit the firecracker in the auditorium. She is a firecracker herself. She is very young yet she dances with the grown girl dancers and never misses a step.
Gracie Shinn and the blonde little boy she dances with always stood out to me...they were really amazing little dancers. I've never been able to find any information on them, though.
shareI don't think she sounds English; she just sounds like that kid in class who kisses up to teacher and tries to show off by overly enunciating her words. It's certainly annoying, but probably the right choice for a character like Amaryllis; it also helps explain Winthrop's aversion to her.
It's amazing that Monique Vermont (who played Amaryllis) gets end-credit billing right alongside Pert Kelton and Ronny Howard - especially when you consider she has almost nothing to do in the film after the first half hour.
I like the way they do the credits at the end with the ladies and the Buffalo Bills, and the Mayor and his wife all walking along the parade route. If you look at it this way, the logical place for Amaryllis was with Winthrop and his mother since she didn't belong with any of the other groups. I do see your point though.
shareIt's hard to find much about her online, but a Google search page gives her birthplace as Casablanca, Morocco, so she may be French. What has me wondering is that they give her birth date as 1942, which would make her over 18 when the filming started. She clearly looks and sounds like a pre-adolescent child, so I wonder whether or not this is a reliable source.

Not sure WHERE she was actually born, but Vermont's webpage (from the Art of Dance Academy in Virginia) says she was 9 when she was cast in "The Music Man," making her date of birth sometime around 1952. She began her career in 1958 at the American National Theater and Academy in Pasadena, California.

20th Century Fox records indicate she was also one of the many juvenile actors who auditioned for "The Sound Of Music."
Amarylith deserves a good, hard slap upside the head for mocking Winthrop's lisp. I get she has a grade school puppy love thing for him, but good Lord. Bullying won't get you your boy crush, kid.
