The object they're handling at the end (Spoilers)

At the end of the movies, the boys are either assembling or disassembling something. It seemed to me like gas masks for the army, Am I right? So is Colin, after his anti-stablishment stance, forced to make equipment for some of the worst ways the military side of the stablishment can fight to defend it?

The old World War II pattern gas masks used to contain blue asbestos in their filters - so dismantling them (even wearing them) would be pretty hazardous!

...now I do it just to watch their f----n' expression change.

They are shown dismantling the gas masks several times throughout the movie, and they are pointedly referred to (Michael Redgrave says to a visitor, "And you can see what they are dismantling there"), so they are pretty hard to miss. They don't just appear at the end of the film.
