The Blu-Ray Disc

The Loneliness of The Long Distance Runner and Saturday Night and Sunday Morning are both on blu-ray! I have the new editions on DVD but I must get a Blu-ray player. Can anyone who has either of these or both comment on how great a difference the blu-ray quality is compared to the DVD's?

I've often wondered why it would make sense to get something like this on Blu-ray. Of course, sometimes Blu-ray is the only way to get the best version of a film (like something from Criterion); but otherwise, it doesn't add much to the film, which wasn't high-def to begin with.

I'm curious about the aspect ratio though. From IMDb, it appears this was shot in 1.66:1, which wasn't unusual for the time. What is the AR on the Blu-ray disc? Did you assume it was cut-down?

Are you serious? Blu-ray brings old movies to life. Just saw this film on the big screen in high-def - what an experience.

Obviously you didn't read or understand what I wrote (and couldn't have read what I was responding to, since it's gone). I won't bother trying to explain it to you.

Ah, thought you were talking about old movies on blu-ray.

I don't know what 'big screen' you saw it on. If it was an HD digital projection on a movie screen, I'm sure it was better; but that's not the case for many Blu-rays with indifferent transfers of movies.

The comment I was responding to was nearly FOUR YEARS AGO and has been deleted. But my assumption is that it had to do with the aspect ratio on the BD the poster bought/watched. If it was 1.66, that's one reason why a high-def BD of the movie doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense. There's no wide-screen AR. Yes, you will see the grain of the film better; but that's only one aspect of Blu-ray.
