Very profound, in light of the theories of Theodore Dalrymple (spoilers)
Most viewers probably supported Colin's decision to lose the race, however, I found it tragic. Writer Theodore Dalrymple speaks of the underclass's pathological need to feel oppressed, to feel victimised, in order to avoid personal responsibility and provide a scapegoat for its own poor decision making. Well, this theory is epitomised by the ending of this film. We're supposed to support Colin in his determination to remain at the bottom just when he had a chance for a start in life, but I, for one, found it heartbreaking, albeit accurate and very profound.
