Similar scene in The Shining

When Humbert was trying to locate Charlotte after she stormed out of the bedroom during a tiff, he slowly opened the bathroom door to reveal a steam-enswirled bath upstage. It was very similar to a scene in The Shining when Jack opened the bathroom door in room 237. Similar enough, imo, to suggest an intentional recurring motif on Kubricks part.

I was thinking the same thing while watching it on TCM this evening! Half-expected to see Shelley Winters rise from the tub topless, which would have been just as scary as the scene from "The Shining"!

On a similar note, the recurring motif I've noticed in many of Kubrick's films is that the characters and events have an overwhelming sense of claustrophobia about them.

that's a good discovery

*beep* always happens in bathrooms in Stanley Kubrik movies

I think it was intentional. Kubrick tends to have important scenes in bathrooms, such as the bathtub lady and meeting Grady in The Shining, a death in Dr. Strangelove, same in Full Metal Jacket, too much drugs in Eyes Wide Shut, and I think there's a bathroom scene in Clockwork Orange.

In A Clockwork Orange (1971) the bathroom scene is a key scene. Alex's singing in the bath causes the house owner to recognize Alex as the one who attacked him and his wife.

Spartacus (1960) has the infamous bath scene with Crassus and Antoninus and the "snails and oysters" conversation.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) has the scene on the Lunar shuttle with Dr. Floyd reading the "zero gravity toilet" instructions.
