Lolita 1997

Lolita 1997 came out and flopped just before Kubrick was taken out because of EWS in 1999.

are there any quotes from him, especially about a Lolita without the Hays Code [which he said impeded him], ie his 1962 comments would suggest that a post 1970 version SHOULD be a real hit.

Lolita 1997 is so vulgar compared to the 1962 one.

reply

Agreed, the 1997 version was unwatchable for me.

reply

No, it is a superior film

oh behave, one is art the other hollywood plastic

One (the 1997 one) does justice to the novel. Th 1962 one is a travesty - - can't believe that Nabokov actually worked on it!

actually its the other way around, proof is that nabokov worked on it himself like you said, but i guess the fact the author himslef worked on it does not ineterest you as much, as your false fantasies about what lolita really is

reply

It is my understanding that the novel was not a lurid soap opera with cheaply vulgar overtones, waxing lyrical about some lovelorn aristocrat - which is what the 1997 film does.

I liked the 1997 version from Adrian Lyne much more than the original.

For one, I thought Lyne's version had better casting. Jeremy Irons was the perfect choice for HH. Frank Langela was great as Quilty. And Dominique Swain was a much more believable choice for the age of that girl she played.

I didn't notice much difference in the quality of the script or direction but the casting really stood out to me.
