Cute line, considering . . .

This just started on TCM. I've seen it several times before, but don't remember noticing this line before.

When Clara and her mother first meet Fabrizzio, he looks at these well-dressed women, one of whom is young and drop-dead gorgeous. The only visual thing about them he compliments is . . .

. . . their tans!

I assume it was in the script before George Hamilton was cast, and is just a wonderful coincindence.

It gave me a grin.

That is effen hilarious. Just watched it myself and missed that one!

Ssssshh! You'll wake up the monkey!

I don't know how I missed that! I was too busy noticing that Olivia de Havilland didn't look all that tan to me, to pick up on the irony of the statement! Great observation!

Just because I'm distractable doesn't mean I

The humor is not ths that she is not tan, but that George Hamilton is well known for being perpetually tanned.

Damn, and I missed watching it. Yes, that's very funny--good of you to catch it.

I certainly can see the hilarity of it, coming as it does from George's mouth. :)
But in the context of this film I think it was simply a "gentlemanly" - i.e. understated and discreet - way of complimenting their appearance.
Anything more than that would have been much too obvious, and could have been perceived as brash.
