What did she eat on the steps?

I've seen this charming film a few times. Very sweet. I don't think her being slow makes any difference to Fabrizio. It seems he loves her for her beauty and also because she is so innocent.

But my real question is that I can never figure out what she picks up on the steps as the guests are throwing rose petals. It's a trivial question I know. But whenever I watch it I always wonder what the heck they're nibbling on?

I don't think it's popcorn because the youngster throws that several minutes before, and the way Fabrizio picks it up and places it into his mouth it looks like a stick of gum. But who would be throwing chewing gum? lol

Possibly they are Jordan almonds, which are traditionally served/eaten at Italian weddings (they are a fertility symbol).

Ahh, never occurred to me.

Thanks!

I think the key point is that it was something edible, but something that people would not ordinarily pick up and eat. Yet, when she picks one up and eats it, he does too--a metaphor for how he will relate to her in their marriage.

Yes, I understood all that. Just curious what the check it was. Watched it again tonight. What a cute movie.

What Clara and Fabrizio are eating outside the church (after the wedding) is basically an edible confetti. If you watch the movie carefully you will see that the people outside the church are throwing the 'confetti'. If anyone has ever had 'bow tie' cookies from the bakery (light airy, thin and crunchy) that is what the edible confetti is like. They just color the dough to make it look pretty, and if anyone chooses, they can eat it.

***Notice there is a little boy eating it out a paper bag outside the church scene***

Probably pepperoni piazza.

The world economy will crash in 2016, so for now, have fun!
