capture sequence redubing?
I heard that much of the action sequence audio had to be re-dubbed due to John Wayne's cursing while wrestling with the animals. Can anybody confirm this? I'd like to submit it to the trivia page

shareThis was confirmed by Howard Hawks in a conversation with Joseph McBride. This was preserved on page 146 in the book "Howard Hawks" published by University Of California Press, ISBN 0-520-04552-1. In this same conversation Hawks provides much more interesting trivia. For example, originally he wanted to make the film with John Wayne and Clark Gable, but Paramount would not raise the budget to finance Gable.
shareThank you. I just submitted that and the Clark Gable thing.

Of course, it would not have worked out anyway as Gable died in November 1960 just after completing The Misfits and Hatari must have been produced in 1961, possibly into early 1962, as it was released in Spring of 1962.
I would think though that the idea for HATARI was thought up earlier like in 1960 (or possibly even 1959), when Gable was still alive and that principle photography would begin in 1961 and 62, and be released for Spring of 1962.
shareYeah, that's probably true. But the idea still would've been pretty lame.
Two big fat geezers wobbling around the Savannah would look bad.
Wayne was already moving pretty slow by this time, and Gable was really past his prime.
Would've been much better with some younger types like Bob Mitchum or Brando. Of course budget would really be an issue at that point!
Wayne was in his early 50s then, hardly a geezer, and he wasn't that fat either. He was heavy set, but never really became "fat" until he was ordered to get fat by Henry Hathaway for True Grit.
shareGable had just completed THE MISFITS before his death, in which he played a cowboy who captured wild horses from the back of a pickup. Those scenes were similar to the animal captures in HATARI! and Gable seemed capable then.
