Criterion Collection DVD Release in August
Criterion is releasing this film in August, I'm sure they'll do an amazing job. It's a good thing because my old VHS of this sucks.

shareGreat! I can't wait to see this (already owning Kwaidan). Now if only Criterion could release "The Human Condition" I, II, and II in a boxset, since spending 100's of $$$ on an OOP dvd with uncertain quality is so not worth it.

Best news in a long time
This is surely one of the greatest films ever, and should really be in the Top 250 here.
can't wait fot his. to my mind one of the greatest samurai films ever. not for its violence ( which is minimal ) but for its great story and the poetry in its telling. great stuff , thanks again Criterion.
shareFantastic news!!!
Wow, it's finally getting the full treatment it deserves. I am speechless. New transfer, interview with Nakadai, other goodies.
It's gonna be torture waiting for it!
This is amazing. I'm so thankfull that it's finally coming out on DVD. THANK YOU CRITERION!!!!!
I agree this needs to be in the top 250. However the top 250 is sort of a joke. It's more of a popularity contest then a real serious ranking. Example this is not in the top 250 but Batman Begins is!!!
Lets change the status Quo NOW
I certainly will be purchasing my copy. Yep, it would be great if a film like SEPPUKU were to be a top 250 best seller rather than stuff like BATMAN BEGINS. Hah! Won't happen. But we can try.
shareI thought "Batman Begins" was wonderful...
Anyways, I can't wait to get this DVD (I already have it on order,) as I've heard great things about it.
Note: The above comments are exclusively my opinion.

I bought and viewed the Criterion release yesterday (Aug. 22) and both the picture and sound quality were excellent. The essay (by Joan Mellen) as well as the interview with Kobayashi himself were extremely insightful. The interview in particular gives the reader an idea of the general themes common to all of Kobayashi's work as well as the directors strong anti-authoritarian background. I'm somewhat disappointed that there were no commentary tracks included in this release. I haven't had a chance to view the 2nd disc but the interviews with Nakadai and Hashimoto look very promising. Definitely a great buy for any fans of the film.
Yesterday I watched Harakiri for the first time. I really liked it!
BTW, there's an easter egg in Criterion Collection DVD of Harakiri. :)
