The Prince

A small work by Macchiavelli. That and this movie are both timeless classics.
Although this has to rank near the top of list for the most somber, sad, depressing movies I've ever seen, it is most definitely one of the best.

The events pictured here from 1630 (which well could have happened) can be viewed from any country's perspective as a general condemnation of inept leadership and ingrained traditions driving people to death.

This is more than a Japanese film. Very appropriate to many modern-day situations.

The focus (I harp on focus more than other features in photography and film) was as sharp as anything Ansel Adams ever did. Quality of the film was excellent (especially the outside swordfight scene - the sky was fantastic!).

Great cinematography. Obviously great acting and what a tale! This must be from Japanese folklore/history.

If you want chop-socky, this film is NOT for you. But a great and wonderful Samurai tale.
