Insane!
F#CK! Harakiri was insane! I don't remember the last time I called a film a masterpiece, but, in this case, I'm going to have to. Great acting, effective cinematography, caustic dialogue that further intensify tense moments and absolutely magnificent storytelling. Every fight sequence was perfectly realistic, even one in particular that involved a one-vs-many scenario. Harakiri also has a quality that few films as dark as this have, it's inspiring. The unfortunate turn of events that bring the lead character to feeling part of an unjust world and the rage that stems from this feeling is one that can be instantly mirrored. And knowing that such rage can make you do wonders, you sit tight rooting for him and (hopefully) believing that he'll come out of this impossible situation on top. There's cathartic violence (both gory and realistic), that's justified by the film's internal moral compass. Hanshiro's character is neither deep nor complex, but he's a character I won't ever forget purely because of his sheer grit and heroic nature. 10/10. It's a truly remarkable film. GG for Kurosawa.
