Hard to watch

This is my first review but I'll introduce myself as a fan of these old masterful Japanese movies like The Seven Samurai. I bought this movie on recomendation of the score it got on imdb and I found it excrusiatingly painful to watch and I couldn't get through it. It is a masterpiece no doubt but for once it is so violent I'm glad it's black and white. I might give it another try another day.

ccewilliams,I agree. When I first saw it, I saw it with my eyes closed.
Even for the Japanese who are familiar to Harakiri rituals on TV,
this movie is extremely painful. But It's a rare gem as well.Take care.

reply

Thank you for the info you're very kind. Well how old should it be before I show my son this as he likes them too???

reply

By the way my son's ten

reply

Hmmm, hard question. Japanese kids tend to be familiar with Harakiri
depicted in dramas or pictures, therefore that may not be a problem.
As for non-Japanese,for kids in particular, that may be a great shock.
People of the West seem to think that Harakiri is more gruesome than
any other form of death. If you allow him to see that, it requires a
full explanation of what harakiri means in the Code of Samurai, and
why the young samurai was forced to use a bamboo sword.
Without a full explanation, this movie can end up being another
violent movie. Be careful.

He Knows a lot more about it than I do.

reply

Wow! Then he decides, and you follow. Good Luck.

reply

Thank you for your kindness and cooperation

This is no film for a ten year-old, regardless of what he knows or you think he knows.
Issues of violent death at one's hand or by the swords of others are best left to see later in life.

reply

This is no film for a ten year-old...
I wholeheartedly agree.

Amazing film BTW. One of my Top Tens for sure.

reply

It's very bad chapter when the man starts to do harakiri with his wooden bamboo stick. Gross!

reply

I found the film engaging, and not boring in the least. However, I did find the seppuku scene hard to watch. Once you get past that I think you should find it very engaging, and the violence really doesn't escalate at all.

reply

To be honest I didn't think this film was that violent, but some think differently than others.

reply

I wholeheartedly agree. I'm wondering if the OP is a troll.

Pretty tame movie IMHO.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

Same here. The violence was pretty tame by pretty much all modern standards, although certainly more visceral than a lot of other samurai films from that era where battles seem to be almost entirely bloodless.

For me, it was difficult to watch (but in an entirely good way) because of the tension and drama being portrayed through the spoken word and acting. Brilliantly challenging film, but in no way unwatchable because of violence.

I saw RoboCop when I was about six and it didn't scar me at all
