Wonderful movie! 10/10

Poetry for men who iwsh they could be 100% honorable, true to all their principles and absolutely fearless.

Slow and building the story in a Rashomon like fashion (or Hero if you've seen that).

Important movie in a capitalist world with less and less values. I am not saying no to abortion gays or sex before marriage or anything like that, nor that this is a movie about decadence vs morality per se, but we all need movies that ask questions about honor and righteousness or we (I.e. the rich "west" will just become a world full of consumers of food (too much), porn and reality TV etc. and other decadent habits...

And that reversal, where Nakadai turns the tables on his hearers!
Yeah, when he starts laughing at the clan members and you see the face of the Clan Elder... I was really upset that the clan not only got away with it but managed to turn the situation around in their favour. Shows how involved I was with the movie. A great film, that.

Amazing movie. In my top 10. I also recommend Samurai Rebellion which is just as good. Seppuku is just .000000000000000000000000000001 times better.

I agree, a 10/10 for sure. I was expecting a good film, maybe even a 9/10, but I was taken completely by surprise by the quality of this film.

Not sure I would call it wonderful but it is definitely a masterpiece.

Nothing new to say about this film, but I wanted to state that I am in awe of this film every time I view it. Perhaps it's just me, but I think it is as close to perfection as a film could be. When Hanshiro laughs it sends chills down my spine. A cannot praise this film enough.

10/10 from me.

As far as I'm concerned, the best movie I have ever seen! I was proud to show it to my 26 year old nephew awhile ago and he couldn't talk about anything else to his cinemaphile buddies, so I bought him the Criterion edition for Christmas.

It truly is a wonderful movie, that packs a visceral punch! Incredibly intense, yet all of that comes from the performances of the wonderful actors, and director Kobayashi's incredible cinematic language.

It works on so many different levels, and speaks volumes on social hierarchy, the dichotomy of modernity vs tradition, the importance of ethics and morals, and the sad truth that few things ever change.

This movie is a very strong movie with a lot of excellent features. However, at 2 hours and 12 minutes it is too long - the movie is too slow moving and becomes a bit boring. This story could have been told in the same effectiveness in 1 hour and 45 or 50 minutes and then would have been worthy of 8.5 or 9/10. As it is I rate it 8/10.
