I am truly amazed!

I saw this film for the first time tonight and I am truly amazed! I never really expected it to be so interesting, unpredictable, touching, heart-rending and memorable!
I am so glad that it has moved up in IMDB's Top 250. Otherwise this film wouldn't have caught my attention! Truly deserves its accolades!

***Not Much Of A Spoiler Below***

The scene where they were walking through the old cemetary and down the foggy bamboo path was photographic genius and I actually got chills. Not to be outdone by the swordplay scene in the windswept field with the ominous clouds blanketing them. The cinematography was truly breathtaking.

Agree :-)
I saw this movie through blu-ray on a 120" inch screen home theater. Feast for eyes!!

It's a shame (or a blessing?) that we need movies that are 60 years old in B&W (I love B&W though) and made in a foreign country with subtitles to find something that's really worth watching. While Hollywood keeps pumping out unwatchable crap at $12 a ticket that's completely dependent on green screen special effects and computer simulations.

Unfortunately this is no longer in the Top 250 as it has less than the IMDb requirement of 25,000 votes. This is the consummate example of why the vote requirement should be lower as gems like this are gone from the list.

I just watched this movie for the first time, and I feel the same way.

On paper, a two-hour-plus film containing almost nothing but exposition, using mostly flashbacks, sounds boring--but it's anything but that. Deaths looms around the corner at nearly every scene, and perhaps that's part of the reason the story is so compelling.
