I've noticed something about the people who write in this board....

And I mean the board for this particular film .....

Is it my imagination or are the IQ levels of pretty much everyone on this particular board higher than MOST of IMDB?

I view other films and the related discussion boards are just craven displays of arrogance, trollery or idiocy. I don't want to sound like some sort of elitist, but I've read many of the posts by the people who actually watched this film, and darn it, the vast majority of you seem really smart or at least very insightful and profound.

It creates a thought in my mind that certain films are watched and enjoyed by people with a profound love of cinema and are given to deep thoughts and concepts.

Sorry for my rant. Perhaps it was just the shock of trolling around a Paris Hilton thread and then suddenly coming here.......

I guess the finest films just inspire the best in people... Its also not seen by many (mainly cinephiles or fans of samurai and japanese cinema) so I guess that's why there's little conflict of opinion. Harakiri is pretty much unanimously praised by everyone here.
Just saw it for the first time and I can honestly say that I haven't been moved by a film like this in a long time. Every aspect of the movie was perfect... I'm excited to see more Kobayashi.

Part of it may be that there aren't groups of fanboy/girls for this film or a rival film. Also, many people just don't have the patience or inclination to watch a film with subtitles.

I also think this is because Seppuku is a "lesser known" film. There is a little snobbery on the Seven Samurai message boards.

My ego is tingling.

But seriously, it is probably only because of small sample sizes. Obscure, foreign, black and white films generally don't have hordes of casual viewers who might not have patience for a film like this. One the other hand there also isn't a high risk of teenage fanboys who claim everyone who criticizes a movie is too dumb to get it. Although I've gotten into some pretty inane arguments over Godard with presumably well-versed cinephiles, so you never know.
