One of the greatest opening sequences?

The beautiful Lee Remick driving across the bay bridge, the great night shots of San Francisco, the flawless direction, and last but not least -- Henry Mancini's striking and unforgettable score... man, what an utterly great moment in film.

On a side note, Kelly passing by the Twin Peaks sign had me thinking of how much this may have inspired David Lynch's work; and before that moment came up, I was already reminded of Lynch.

I just watched the film for the first time, and I agree. Interesting that just before it I watched ANOTHER great film for the first time, with another fascinating opening (pre-credit) scene: Requiem for a Heavyweight.

Yes! the opening scene from Requiem for a Heavyweight is indeed fascinating - an absolutely memorable sequence. One of the best films from '62, along with this classic.

Touch of Evil(Welles)1958 and Apocalypse Now(Coppola)1979 have great opening sequences.

I didn't know what to expect, but I've come to trust TCM Underground to feature interesting movies. But yes, I agree with you that the opening is incredible. I was hooked until the scene where the mannequin lady shows up at the office and my mind started wondering.

Is there an interview where Lynch talks about this movie?

I agree that the opening sequence was brilliant, and there were other interesting scenes throughout. I liked the one in the mannequin lady's apartment/studio also, and the film kept my interest throughout. I'm not sure I would call it "terror", more likely "suspense", but it worked. I especially liked Mancini's masterful score and the San Francisco location shooting on Fisherman's Wharf and at Candlestick Park - seeing Don Drysdale onscreen in close-up was great!
